AI for Social Impact in the Global South
By Alpan Raval This lecture describes AI work carried out for social impact (AI4SI) in the developing world, at the Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence in India. We introduce what we mean by AI4SI, briefly describe how this work ties in to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and the overall challenges in introducing and deploying AI technology for social upliftment in areas where technology adoption is limited, and AI is poorly understood. Finally, we describe three case studies of specific AI projects we are working on in the agriculture and healthcare domains, as well as challenges encountered in these projects at various stages of development, from data to adoption to deployment.
